The Golden Hind
Flagship of Sir Francis Drake
Picture

  • Flagship of Sir Francis Drake
  • Typical 16th Century English Galleon
  • Originally named Pelican
  • Circumnavigated the globe between 1577 and 1580
  • She was renamed The Golden Hind on 20 August, 1578, during the circumnavigation in honor of Drake’s benefactor and patron, Sir Christopher Hatton
  • Drake used The Golden Hind to capture several Spanish ships with the “blessing” of Queen Elizabeth
  • The Spanish considered Drake a pirate; England considered him a "privateer"
  • The ship was retired in 1580, and by order of Queen Elizabeth, was made into a “museum ship” from 1580 till 1650
  • She was so badly rotten away by 1650 that she was broken up
  • A replica of her exists today on the Thames in London
