Captain James Cook's ship of discovery

  • Launched in June 1764 as the Earl of Pembroke employed in transporting coal
  • Purchased by the Royal Navy in 1768 and renamed HMS Endeavour for a scientific mission
  • Commanded by Lieutenant James Cook, she sailed around the world from 1768 to 1771
  • In 1770 became the first ship to explore the east coast of Australia
  • She struck a reef off Australia and almost sank
  • Arrived back in Dover, England, in July  1771
