La Belle

Picture
La Belle was one of 4 ships which sailed to the new world in 1684 -1685 with La Salle.

The expedition commanded by Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle was to establish a colony.

La Belle was a "kit ship" designed to be brought in parts to the new world but sailed assembled instead.

In February 1686, while attempting to cross Matagorda Bay in a storm, she foundered and was lost.

Her remains were discovered in 1995.

She was excavated by the Texas Historical Commission in 1996-1997.

The City of Palacios, Texas, was instrumental in assisting with the excavation.

La Belle's remains and artifacts from her are in the Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin, TX.

NOTE: This model is now in the collection of the City by the Sea Museum, Palacios, TX
